Poo and Peace...

I’m currently sat in my house, during a beautiful sunny day, watching, and occasionally trying to help some workmen clear up a blocked sewer on our street, that unfortunately enough, has as manhole in our back garden. It’s a learning curve, and a fragrant one at that.

I have massive respect for these guys, who do this day in day out. Last night, we were up with some of their emergency crew trying to fix the problem, and most of all, trying to stop days of sewage flooding gardens and houses up and down the street. Apparently with old terrace streets like ours, at least half the street could be on one main pipe system.

Anyway, something one of the guys said yesterday has continue to rattle and prod in my mind. The lorry couldn’t get down the street, so I stood there trying to make conversation and take my mind off the smell and sight below me. We talked about his work and how long his shift was that night. Then, after another brief pause he looked up at the sky and almost whispered “it’s peaceful”…

Given the circumstances, it took me by surprise. I gave some silly responses and noticed he was still looking up at the sky, taking it in.

It was a quiet night. But it made me think, could the place where we live become a place where people find peace? Not just friends finding warm hospitality, but even strangers encountering a deep peace, that though they’re surrounded by crisis and sewage, they stand in awe.
